Groundwater Modeling

GeoModel, Inc. was established to provide groundwater modeling services in order to simulate and predict groundwater flow and contaminant transport (solute transport) processes. GeoModel, Inc. has conducted groundwater modeling for numerous clients, using various state-of-the-art, one- to three-dimensional computer models.

GeoModel, Inc. has assisted industrial clients and governmental regulatory agencies with projects involving risk assessment, prediction of plume migration and natural attenuation, and design of recovery well networks and other remedial alternatives.

GeoModel, Inc. provides the following groundwater modeling and site characterization services:

Groundwater Flow Modeling:

GeoModel, Inc. provides groundwater flow computer modeling services for a variety of applications, including homogeneous and heterogeneous aquifer conditions, fracture flow, surface water influences, and variable density flow.

The following programs can be used for groundwater flow simulations:

MODFLOW

MODFLOW is a modular three-dimensional, finite-difference computer model developed by the USGS for the simulation of groundwater flow under natural and man-made conditions. It is a widely-used groundwater flow model, and is accepted by nearly all governmental agencies for use in groundwater flow modeling. GeoModel, Inc. has used MODFLOW on various groundwater modeling projects.

The graphical interface program Visual MODFLOW (developed by Waterloo Hydrogeologic, Inc., Copyright 2003) combines the latest versions of MODFLOW, MODPATH, and MT3D.

Below is an example of output from the Visual MODFLOW package:

FEFLOW

FEFLOW is an advanced, finite-element, groundwater modeling software package used for complex groundwater flow and contaminant transport (solute transport) modeling applications. The FEFLOW model runs on a Windows, PC based platform (developed by Waterloo Hydrogeologic, Inc. and WASY).

Contaminant (Solute) Transport Modeling:

GeoModel, Inc. provides contaminant transport (solute transport) computer modeling services for a variety of contaminant species, such as dissolved constituents, LNAPLS (light non-aqueous phase liquids) including petroleum-based products, DNAPLS (dense non-aqueous phase liquids), heat, and saline water.

The following programs can be used for contaminant (solute) transport simulations:

MT3D

MT3D is a modular, numerical, three-dimensional contaminant transport model, used for simulating solute transport in complex hydrogeologic settings. MT3D is supported by the Visual MODFLOW graphical pre- and post-processor and has full compatibility with the groundwater flow model MODFLOW. A wide range of contaminant transport problems can be solved with MT3D.

Below is an example of output from the MT3D model:

3-D Visualization and Animation Programs:

GeoModel, Inc. uses three-dimensional (3-D) visualization and animation programs for presentation of groundwater modeling results and site characterization studies. With these visualization and animation packages GeoModel, Inc. can display 3-D isosurfaces and color contours of observed site data or groundwater modeling results, rotate the display along any axis, and produce cross-sections and fence diagrams along any axis of the modeled area.

The following programs can be used for 3-D visualization and animation of site characteristics and groundwater modeling results:

VISUAL GROUNDWATER

Visual Groundwater is a graphical tool for visualization, interpretation, and animation of site characterization data and modeling results and was developed by Waterloo Hydrogeologic, Inc., Copyright 2003.

Using Visual Groundwater, the results of groundwater modeling with Visual MODFLOW, MT3D, or other groundwater modeling programs can be presented in a colorful, 3D graphic. Site characterization data, such as observed soil boring data, or geophysical measurements, including resistivity, natural gamma, or conductivity, also can be displayed in 3-D isosurfaces or in cross-sections.

Below is an example of output from the Visual Groundwater package:

Groundwater Modeling Projects Completed by GeoModel, Inc.

Industrial Site with Dissolved Inorganic Contaminants --

Groundwater modeling with the Random-Walk model was used to simulate the development of an inorganic plume and to select optimum locations for recovery wells. The computer model accurately predicted the cone-of-influence and recovery of the contaminated groundwater to date.

Site Contaminated with Dissolved Chlorinated Solvents --

Groundwater modeling was conducted using MODFLOW to assess groundwater flow at the site and to determine optimum locations for recovery wells and an infiltration gallery to remediate the site. The computer model accurately simulated the actual capture zone of the recovery wells and mounding of groundwater near the infiltration gallery.

Groundwater Model for United Arab Emirates --

3-D Groundwater Flow Map

GeoModel, Inc. produced a 3-dimensional groundwater flow model for a golf course site in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. The groundwater flow model was developed to assist engineers in the design of drains around the lakes in the golf course. The Golden Software, SURFER, model was used to produce the 3-D contour map of the groundwater data.

Air Modeling

GeoModel, Inc. has conducted computer air modeling at industrial sites for airborne plume hazard prediction and plant emissions permits. GeoModel, Inc. uses the most accepted air models including:
