Locating sinkholes and subsidence without digging, probing, or drilling can be accomplished using non-destructive field surveys. The most common non-destructive methods used for locating sinkholes and subsidence are ground penetrating radar and ground resistivity.

Ground Penetrating Radar Surveys

A ground penetrating radar (GPR) survey is typically conducted to locate a sinkhole or subsidence. A GPR survey can be conducted in homes and buildings, and on roadways, train tracks, and airport runways. A sinkhole usually occurs in karst limestone areas, but sinkholes and subsidence can also occur in areas with soft soil, in mining areas, or where some other subsurface disturbance, such as an earthquake, has occurred.
